Jorge Chávez International
Airport is Peru's main
international and domestic
airport, in 2005 it served over 5.4 million passengers
receiving flights from other South America countries, the
USA and Europe.
The airport is located in Callao, some 10 kilometers (6
miles) from downtown Lima. Callao is the port city now fully
integrated with Lima, the nation's capital.
This modern airport provides all the
necessary facilities such as: International Police services,
immigration, customs as well as restaurants, bathrooms, stores
selling traveling articles, magazine stands, and waiting rooms.
For years the airport was the hub for the defunct Aero Peru
and Faucett Airlines, now it serves as the main hub for new
aviation companies.
The airport was inaugurated in 1960 and is managed by
Lima Airport Partners (LAP), a joint
venture of Alterra Partners and Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport
Services Worldwide.
In February 2005 the airport completed its first phase of
renovation which includes the Peru Plaza Shopping
Center and a new concourse with 18 gates, 7 of them
with boarding bridges (jet ways). The next phase will
include the construction of a four-star hotel and the
expansion of the concourse with 12 additional boarding
bridges.
The airport was awarded the title of best airport in South
America by Skytrax World Airports Awards 2005.
