Iquitos
is the capital of the department of Loreto and is located in the head waters of the Amazon river in the Peruvian
Amazon river basin. It is the second biggest city on the entire
Amazon River after
Manaus (Brazil).
Iquitos is only accessible by air. No roads exist connecting with
the city of Lima, a thousand kilometers (625 miles) away. This
lively and friendly city is a mix of government offices, businesses
and people who moved here from the surrounding jungles in search of
a better life, education for their children and healthcare.
Iquitos has become one of the most popular travel destinations in
South America and offers accommodations fit for any traveler. It is
the starting, or ending, point for many Jungle Lodge or Amazon River
programs. Travelers from around the world visit the area every year
and itineraries can be created to fit your needs and expectations.
We are currently adding more river programs and jungle lodges which
may not have been added here. Please contact us for information. All
programs in the area can be combined with extension programs to the
rest of the country or programs into Brazil. |
