Most transportation
in the Amazon will be provided by ship and boat. Locals use
the ferries between cities to transport themselves or the
goods they sell along the rivers. Some local shipping
companies offer services in the Amazon region for locals and
some "Very Adventurous" tourists. We discourage any tourist
to take this type of transportation as it is known to be
insecure, shipping companies do not keep a tight sailing
schedule and food and accommodations are VERY basic at the
most. We strongly recommend that visitors traveling the
Amazon River and its tributaries do so on trips organized by
tour companies specializing in this area. Please
